The New George Muller's?

My wife and I have a heart for orphans.  We are in the process of trying to adopt some children from Ethiopia.  In this process, we have come across a number of various people engaged in ministry much like George Muller was in the 1800's.  I would like to introduce you to two of these ministries.  These two strike me as modern day George Muller's stepping out in faith to care for the orphan.

Amazima Ministries International - After her first visit to Uganda in 2006, Katie Davis returned in 2007 and hasn't left.  She welcomes orphans into her life and also works to help other orphan children get schooling help, etc...  She has an excellent blog, my wife loves to read which you can find here.

Iris Ministries - Rolland and Heidi Baker live in Mozambique and care for numerous orphans. A friend of mine introduced me to their ministry.  They care for almost 2000 children among their numerous orphan homes.

While I do not agree with everything about their ministries.  I believe these two examples issue a great challenge to the North American Church to step out in faith and see what God can and will do with his people.

  1. I heard a story on a couple who adopted a child from Samoa (I think) on 'This American Life.' It showed a side of adoption that I have never heard. I think the title was "No Road Map" or something like that.

  2. The story you are referring to can be found here http://www.thisamericanlife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?episode=380

The section, which is of interest, starts at 30:18 and runs 31 minutes. It follows the Nyberg's who adopted Elleia from Samoa. It turns out the girl was taken from her family and adopted without the family's full consent. Unfortunately this is serious stuff, it is human trafficking and the adoption agency should be tried, convicted and loose their license. Which they were.

There are agencies engaged in such deceptive practices and that is why adoptive parents must seek Hague approved organizations and adopt through Hague approved countries. In our process of adoption, we initial started with an organization out of Ferndale, WA but began to question their ethics and be concerned over practices like 'This American Life' exposes. We stopped and changed to WACAP.

For those interested in adoption, please do the research and be diligent and concerned over these kinds of issues. Sure we may be able to provide a 'better life' but not at the expense of Christian ethics.
